Montessori Toy Storage

Low, open storage that gives every toy a visible place at a child's height. Three low Montessori shelves: a wood toy shelf with five open cubbies for baskets, puzzles and blocks, and two front-facing bookshelves whose hidden compartments keep the next rotation out of sight. Bookshelf and toy storage that match, all in FSC®-certified Baltic birch, assembled without tools.

Open shelf, or hidden storage?

The Toy Shelf keeps everything in view in five open cubbies. The bookshelves show book covers up front and tuck toys and extra books into a soft-close top compartment; the Large adds a side drawer.

Montessori Toy Shelf

A low, wide wooden toy shelf with five open cubbies: two wide, three narrow, all within a toddler's reach. Curved sides so it reads as furniture, not a bin. Wall strap included.

Toy shelf or bookshelf? How to choose

All three are low enough for a toddler to use alone and built from the same Baltic birch. The difference is what goes in them, and whether the extras stay in view or out of sight.

Choose the Toy Shelf if

  • Toys, baskets and puzzles are what need a home, and you want all of them visible at once.
  • You have a wider wall to fill: at 40 inches it is shaped more like a low bench than a bookcase.
  • You rotate toys often and like to see at a glance what's out.

Choose a Bookshelf if

  • Books come first, and you want the covers facing out so a child who can't read yet can still pick a story.
  • You want toys and extra books out of sight between rotations: the Large's side drawer and both models' top compartments do that.
  • The space is narrower: both bookshelves are 23 inches wide, and the Small is only 14 inches high.

The idea

What makes toy storage Montessori

A Montessori toy shelf is built around how a young child actually chooses what to play with. The shelf sits low enough to reach from the floor. Toys sit in the open, each in its own spot, instead of piled in a toy box. And there are fewer out at once, so the choice is easy to make and easy to put back. Call it a Montessori shelf, a play shelf or a toy organizer; the pattern is the same: low, open and sparse. The storage does the teaching: a child who can see every option, and knows where each one lives, will tidy up without being asked more often than you'd expect.

Every Dannico shelf follows that pattern. The Toy Shelf's five open cubbies hold this week's toys at child height. The front-facing bookshelves do the same for books, and keep the rest of the collection in a top compartment or a drawer until it's their turn. If you're new to the idea, start with how to choose a Montessori toy shelf, or see how a Montessori shelf compares with a cube organizer like the IKEA KALLAX.

Toy rotation

Fewer toys out, more play

Toy rotation is the habit that makes open storage work: a handful of toys on the shelf, the rest put away, and a swap every week or two. The Toy Shelf is the display; a bookshelf's drawer or top compartment is a natural place to park what's resting. Four to six activities out at once is a useful starting point, not a rule. Two guides from the workshop: how to set up a Montessori toy rotation and the eight-toy, one-shelf system for real families.

Material & making

Built in San Antonio from Baltic birch

Every Dannico shelf is designed, built and shipped from our San Antonio workshop in FSC®-certified Baltic birch plywood, finished with a water-based, low-VOC sealant and a UV-cured topcoat. We build in plywood rather than solid wood boards because its cross-laminated layers stay flat and stable through humid summers and heated winters, and hold the hardware-free joints. It is plywood, and we say so. The finish, the joinery and how each piece is built are covered on our materials and craftsmanship page.

Where it fits

Toy storage and bookshelf, side by side

In a playroom, the 40-inch Toy Shelf takes a full wall of toys at child height. In a nursery, the Small Bookshelf sits beside a crib or floor bed. In a living room, any of the three reads as furniture rather than kids' storage: natural birch, curved edges, no bright plastic. Put the Toy Shelf and the Bookshelf together as a set and you have 63 inches of kids' bookshelf and toy storage along one wall, toys on one side and books on the other. Questions

Before you choose

Contact us
What is a Montessori toy shelf?

A low, open shelf that keeps a small selection of toys visible and reachable, each in its own place, so a child can choose and tidy up without help. Ours is 24 inches high with five open cubbies; the bookshelves apply the same idea to books, with covers facing out.

Toy shelf or bookshelf: which should I buy first?

Start with whatever is on the floor most. If it's toys, the Toy Shelf. If it's books, the Bookshelf, which also hides toys in its drawer. Many families end up with bookshelf and toy storage side by side: 63 inches of child-height storage along one wall.

How do I set up a Montessori shelf?

Keep it sparse. Put out four to six activities, one per cubby or tray, each with its own place, and leave the rest of the toys out of sight in a drawer, a top compartment or a closet. Arrange the shelf at the child's eye level, with nothing stacked or piled, so every option is visible from the floor. Swap a few items every week or two, and you have a toy rotation without buying anything else. Our guide to rotating toys with Montessori shelves walks through it.

Do the shelves come with baskets or bins?

No. Each shelf ships on its own so you can match baskets to what you already have. Cubby and compartment measurements are on every product page; the Toy Shelf's upper cubbies are about 19 inches wide and 9.5 inches high, the lower ones about 12.75 by 9.5.

Is the Toy Shelf anchored to the wall?

A wall strap comes in the Toy Shelf's box, and we recommend securing it following the installation instructions; that step takes a drill or a screwdriver. Furniture is not intended for climbing, and children should be supervised during use.

Is it solid wood?

No. All three shelves are FSC®-certified Baltic birch plywood, chosen because it stays flat and holds the hardware-free joints. We don't describe it as solid wood.

Do I need tools to put them together?

No. All three press together by hand with no screws; a rubber mallet makes the joints easier to seat but isn't required. The Toy Shelf takes 5 to 10 minutes, the Small Bookshelf about 15 and the Large 15 to 30. Instructions: Toy Shelf assembly, Large Bookshelf assembly and Small Bookshelf assembly.

How is this different from a cube organizer?

A cube organizer stores toys in bins you can't see into, at whatever height the unit happens to be. A Montessori shelf is built to be low, open and sparse, so a child can see each choice and put it back. We compare the two in Montessori toy storage vs. IKEA KALLAX.
