Montessori furniture is built to a child's height so they can reach, choose and put away on their own. Dannico makes four pieces for that: a front-facing bookshelf with a hidden drawer, a smaller bookshelf for nurseries and reading corners, an open toy shelf with five cubbies, and a set of wooden number blocks. The shelves are FSC®-certified Baltic birch, press together without tools, and ship free within the contiguous US.
Everything within reach
Everything has a place a child can reach. Books face out, toys sit one to a cubby, and the rest waits in a drawer or compartment until it's their turn.
Front-facing book display with a soft-close top compartment and a side drawer, opening left or right, for puzzles, flashcards and toys. About 80 books with the storage full.
A low, wide wooden toy shelf with five open cubbies: two wide, three narrow, all within a toddler's reach. Curved sides so it reads as furniture, not a bin. Wall strap included.
Three front-facing tiers with the same soft-close top compartment, for nurseries and small rooms. Comes with a riser block so short board books show their covers.
Ages are a guide, not a rule. The question is what your child reaches for every day, and whether it has a place they can get to without asking.
From about 6 months: Small Montessori Bookshelf
Low enough to reach from a crawl. Three tiers hold about 20 books with the covers out, and a riser block keeps short board books standing straight. The top compartment holds the next rotation. Fits beside a crib or a floor bed. See the Small Bookshelf.
About 1 to 5 years: Montessori Toy Shelf
Five open cubbies at standing height, one toy or tray in each. The rest waits in a closet until it's their turn. At 40 inches wide it takes a full wall in a playroom or living room. See the Toy Shelf.
About 2 to 8 years: Montessori Bookshelf
Four front-facing shelves for 80+ books, a side drawer for puzzles and the books waiting their turn, and a top compartment for the things you'd rather keep out of sight. The piece most families start with. See the Bookshelf.
About 3 to 7 years: Reach & Count
Beechwood blocks sized to their number, 1 to 10, with 20 double-sided activity cards. They live on the bookshelf's top or in its drawer between uses. See Reach & Count.
The idea
What makes furniture Montessori
“Montessori” isn’t a regulated label for furniture. It describes how a piece is built: at the child’s height, open so every option is visible, with fewer things out at once, in natural materials that read as furniture rather than toys. The point is that a child can choose, use and put away without an adult in the loop.
Every Dannico piece follows that pattern. Book covers face out. Cubbies sit at standing height. The rest of the collection waits in a drawer or a top compartment. It’s Baltic birch, with no bright plastic. The furniture does nothing on its own; it removes the reasons a child has to ask for help. If you’re new to the idea, start with how to create a Montessori prepared environment at home or why a bookshelf faces the covers out.
Where it fits
One room, four pieces
The Bookshelf and the Toy Shelf are the same wood, the same curved edges and the same 24-inch height, so they sit together along one wall: 63 inches of child-height storage, books on one side and toys on the other. The Small Bookshelf belongs in the nursery or beside a reading chair. The number blocks live in the bookshelf’s drawer or on its top between uses.
Every Dannico shelf is designed, built and shipped from our San Antonio workshop in FSC®-certified Baltic birch plywood, finished with a water-based, low-VOC sealant and a UV-cured topcoat. We build in plywood rather than solid wood boards because its cross-laminated layers stay flat and stable through humid summers and heated winters, and hold the hardware-free joints. It is plywood, and we say so. The number blocks are beechwood, hand-sanded and engraved. The finish, the joinery and how each piece is built are covered on our materials and craftsmanship page.
Furniture built to a child’s size and height, open enough that every option is visible, and simple enough that a child can use it without help: a low shelf with book covers facing out, open cubbies at standing height, a small table and chair, a floor bed. There’s no official standard; the name describes the design idea. The four Dannico pieces on this page are built around it.
Which piece should I buy first?
Whatever is on the floor most. If it’s books, the Montessori Bookshelf, which also hides toys in its drawer. If it’s toys, the Toy Shelf. For a baby’s room or a tight corner, the Small Bookshelf. Most families start with the Bookshelf and add the Toy Shelf later.
Is it solid wood?
No. The three shelves are FSC®-certified Baltic birch plywood, chosen because it stays flat and holds the hardware-free joints. We don’t describe it as solid wood. The Reach & Count blocks are solid beechwood.
Do I need tools to put the shelves together?
No. All three press together by hand with no screws; a rubber mallet makes the joints easier to seat but isn’t required. The Toy Shelf takes 5 to 10 minutes, the Small Bookshelf about 15 and the Large 15 to 30. Instructions: Toy Shelf assembly, Large Bookshelf assembly and Small Bookshelf assembly.
Where is it made?
Designed, built and shipped from our workshop in San Antonio, Texas, by a small team. Building here costs more than importing, and we do it so we can check quality piece by piece, keep the work local, and fix a flaw in days rather than after a whole container has shipped.
How does shipping and returns work?
Shipping is free within the contiguous US, and orders ship within one business day. You have 30 days to return a piece for a full refund. For Alaska, Hawaii and other countries, the rate is shown at checkout.
Do the pieces match?
Yes. All three shelves are the same Baltic birch with the same curved edges, and the Bookshelf and Toy Shelf are the same 24-inch height, so they line up side by side. Together they give you 63 inches of child-height storage along one wall.
