Front-facing books at child height

A front-facing bookshelf shows book covers rather than just their spines. Children can recognize a familiar picture, look over the available stories and choose what they want to explore. The low, open display makes the books part of the room, ready for a quiet reading moment or a shared story.

Covers-out display lets a child choose by the picture long before they can read a title. Keep the books your child reaches for most on the shelves they can reach easily, and show them where each book goes afterwards. Choosing a book and putting it back is a small, everyday way for children to do things independently and help look after their reading area.

At 24 inches high, the Large Bookshelf keeps its front-facing display low, at child height. As your child's interests change, you can change the selection while keeping the same place for choosing and returning books.

Hidden storage for your next book rotation

The books on display are only part of a home library. Our Montessori bookshelf with hidden storage keeps the rest nearby in two places: a top compartment and a side drawer. Set out a manageable selection on the four display shelves and keep the rest together for another day.

A top compartment for extra books and toys

Use the compartment at the top for additional books or toys that are not part of the current display. Its easy-grip opening provides access to the storage inside, so you can keep everyday reading materials in the same piece of furniture.

Two light wood bookshelves shown on a clean off-white background, with large text reading 'Choose your drawer side' and labels indicating left-side drawer and right-side drawer orientation. The shelves are styled with children's books inside, and smaller text at the top says 'Made to fit your room.

A side drawer that suits your nursery or playroom

Choose a left- or right-opening drawer when you order, to suit where the bookshelf will stand. Pick the side that faces open floor rather than a wall, crib or other furniture, so the drawer has room to open. It gives you a separate place for books and other reading-time essentials.

Rotate the selection without moving the library

Keep a few familiar favorites on display and bring out different books as your child's interests change. Move the books coming off display into storage, then place the next selection with the covers facing forward. You can organize a rotation around an interest, a season or the stories your child is asking for, rather than following a fixed timetable.

Board books and picture books come in very different sizes, so how many covers show at once depends on your mix. Put the covers you want your child to notice at the front.

What is a Montessori bookshelf?

A Montessori bookshelf is a low, front-facing book display designed to encourage independence and a love of reading in young children. Unlike traditional bookshelves, which store books spine-out, a Montessori bookshelf presents books with covers facing forward, making it easier for little ones to choose and engage with books on their own.

What are the benefits of a Montessori bookshelf?

A Montessori bookshelf has many benefits including promoting independence, organization, and early literacy by making books easily accessible to young children. It fosters decision-making skills and encourages a love for reading from an early age.

At what age can my child start using a Montessori Bookshelf?

Children as young as 6 months old can benefit from a Montessori bookshelf, as they begin exploring books by touching and flipping through pages. It remains useful through toddlerhood and beyond, supporting a child’s reading development.

How many books can fit on a Montessori bookshelf?

Our Montessori bookshelf has four shelves and hidden compartments so you can store more than 60 books along with some toys!

Is your Montessori bookshelf certified or eco-labeled?

While the final product isn’t yet Greenguard Gold–certified, we're actively working toward it. In the meantime, the materials we use already meet high safety and environmental standards. Our Baltic birch plywood is bonded with phenolic adhesive that’s urea-formaldehyde–free (NAUF) and compliant with TSCA Title VI and CARB Phase II emission standards. In fact, it's exempt from formaldehyde testing under HUD Rule 24 CFR 3280 due to its ultra-low emission profile.

Additionally, our plywood carries respected third-party certifications, including FSC®, DIN 68705-3, EN 13986, EN 636-3, and Russian GOST—all of which ensure structural integrity and low chemical emissions. We never add glue, varnish, or paint. The UV-cured topcoat on the plywood is non-toxic and kid-safe straight out of the box.

You can find more about our materials and certifications on our Material Info page.

How often should I rotate the books on my child’s bookshelf?

Rotating books on a Montessori bookshelf is highly recommended. Changing the selection every couple of weeks keeps reading exciting and encourages children to explore new topics.

Is the assembly of a Montessori bookshelf easy?

Our Montessori bookshelf is designed for easy assembly, only requiring basic tools. Our Assembly Instructions provide our customers with a hassle-free, straightforward experience, only taking 15-30 minutes for setup.

How easily can the Montessori bookshelf tip over?

Our heavy duty bookshelf features a low center of gravity, making it highly stable and difficult to tip over (even for adults).

How can I use it in a toddler's reading area?

Start with a handful of books your toddler already recognizes and enjoys looking through with you. Stand them covers-out on the shelves your child reaches most easily, show where each one goes after reading, and keep the rest in the drawer or top compartment to swap in later.

Can I store toys as well as books?

Yes. The top compartment and side drawer hold extra books and toys, which keeps the front-facing selection easy to see while other reading-area essentials stay nearby. For open toy storage, see our Montessori Toy Shelf.

What should I compare when choosing a Montessori bookshelf?

Look at the overall height and depth, the way books are displayed, the storage available and how that storage opens in your room. Large combines a front-facing display, top compartment and side drawer; Small offers a lower, shallower alternative. Our guide to Montessori bookshelves explains different bookshelf designs and includes our own models.
