A toy shelf shaped like a piece of furniture
Most toy storage starts with a bin. The Joy Shelf starts with a silhouette.
Gently curved side panels catch the light differently than a straight-edged cube, so it reads as furniture first and storage second. At 24 inches high it is low enough for a toddler to reach every cubby alone, and it is finished the way you'd finish anything else you keep in the room. In a playroom it holds the week's toys; in a living room it holds them without looking like a toy box.
A children's shelf doesn't have to look like children's storage.
Five open cubbies at child height
Interlocking joinery
Precision-cut parts slide together through our interlocking construction, giving the Joy Shelf tool-free assembly without hiding the way the piece is made. No screws, no visible hardware.
Two wide cubbies, three narrow
The two upper cubbies are about 19 inches wide for baskets and larger toys; the three lower ones are about 12.75 inches wide for puzzles, blocks and a few books. All five are 9.5 inches high, 12 inches deep and within a child's reach.
Built to stay in view
No lid to shut and no door to close. An open toy shelf keeps every choice visible, which is the point of a Montessori shelf: a small selection, each item in its own place, easy to take out and easy to return.
Built to stay put
Stability starts with proportion. At 24 inches high and 40 wide, with no drawers to climb and nothing heavy up top, the Joy Shelf is shaped more like a bench than a bookcase: low, wide and planted. Then we add the part you won't see once it's in the room: a wall strap that connects the back panel to the wall.

The toy shelf measures 40 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 24 inches high: a low, wide footprint for a playroom wall, a nursery or the end of a living room.
Upper cubbies (two): about 19″ wide × 9.5″ high × 12″ deep.
Lower cubbies (three): about 12.75″ wide × 9.5″ high × 12″ deep.
Baskets and bins are not included; use these openings to match your own. Placed beside our 23-inch-wide Montessori Bookshelf, the pair makes one 63-inch wall of child-height storage.
Material & care
The Joy Shelf is built from FSC®-certified BB/BB Baltic birch plywood and finished with a water-based, low-VOC sealant and a UV-cured topcoat. We build in Baltic birch rather than solid wood boards because its cross-laminated layers stay flat and stable through humid summers and heated winters, and hold the hardware-free joints. It is plywood, and we say so.
- Rounded edges and a smooth finish, inside the cubbies as well as out.
- To clean, wipe with a damp cloth and dry. Avoid harsh chemicals, which can damage the finish.
- How each piece is cut, finished and checked is on our materials and craftsmanship page.
Assembly & instructions
Tool-free assembly: the parts slide and interlock by hand, with no screws and no visible hardware. Most people finish in 5 to 10 minutes. Securing the included wall strap to the wall takes a drill or a screwdriver.
Toy Shelf or Bookshelf?
Both are 24 inches high and built from the same Baltic birch. The Toy Shelf is wide and open; the Bookshelf shows book covers up front and hides the extras in a top compartment and a side drawer.
Choose the Toy Shelf if
- Toys, baskets and puzzles are what need a home, and you want all of them in view.
- You have a wider wall to fill and want a low, bench-like piece.
Choose the Bookshelf if
- Books come first, and you want toys tucked away in a drawer between rotations.
- The space is narrower: the Bookshelf is 23 inches wide.

What families say
What makes this a Montessori toy shelf?
Its low, open layout. Every toy or activity has a visible, defined place at a height a child can reach, so they can see their choices and return each item to its own spot. Put out a small selection rather than everything you own, and the shelf does the rest.
What age is it for?
It is built at toddler height, so children can use it from the time they are pulling themselves up to a shelf and choosing what to play with. It is not limited to childhood: the same piece moves on to books, art supplies or office storage as the room changes.
Can my toddler reach everything on their own?
Yes. The shelf is 24 inches high with open front access, no doors or lids, so little ones can take toys out and put them back by themselves.
Does the toy shelf include a wall anchor?
Yes. A wall strap comes in the box, and we recommend securing it to the wall following the installation instructions; that step takes a drill or a screwdriver. Furniture is not intended for climbing, and children should be supervised during use.
What are the dimensions, and how big are the cubbies?
The toy shelf measures 40″ wide × 12″ deep × 24″ high. The two upper cubbies are about 19″ wide × 9.5″ high; the three lower cubbies are about 12.75″ wide × 9.5″ high. All are 12″ deep. Its low profile gives a lot of toy storage without overwhelming a nursery, bedroom or playroom.
Do baskets or bins come with it?
No. The shelf ships on its own, so you can match baskets to what you already have. Use the cubby sizes above to check the fit; the wide upper cubbies take larger baskets, the lower ones suit smaller bins, trays and puzzle boxes.
Is the toy shelf easy to assemble?
Yes. The pieces slide and interlock with custom joinery, no tools needed, and most people finish in 5 to 10 minutes. Our assembly instructions walk you through it step by step. Securing the included wall strap to your wall will take a drill or a screwdriver.
What is it made from, and how do I clean it?
FSC®-certified BB/BB Baltic birch plywood with rounded edges, finished with a water-based, low-VOC sealant and a UV-cured topcoat. Made in San Antonio, Texas. To clean, wipe with a damp cloth and dry; avoid harsh chemicals.
Is it solid wood?
No. It is Baltic birch plywood, chosen because it stays flat and holds the hardware-free joints. We don't describe it as solid wood.
How do I use it for toy rotation?
Display a small selection of toys and activities in the five cubbies and store the rest elsewhere, then swap them as your child's interests change. Four to six activities out at once, rotated every week or two, is a useful starting point rather than a rule. Our guide to setting up a Montessori toy rotation goes into detail.
Can the shelf hold books as well as toys?
Yes. The cubbies take books, puzzles, activity trays and play materials that fit their dimensions. For a dedicated face-out book display, pair it with our front-facing Montessori Bookshelf, which is designed to show book covers to children and has a drawer for toys.
Why does it cost more than basic shelves?
Basic shelves can hold toys. The Dannico Montessori Toy Shelf is designed to become part of your home. Made in Texas from Baltic birch plywood, it combines sculpted curves, smooth rounded edges and custom interlocking joinery for simple assembly and a clean appearance without rows of exposed hardware.
Unlike storage that feels limited to a playroom, its timeless design can move into a bedroom, study, creative space or home office as your family's needs change. You're investing in a distinctive, thoughtfully engineered piece of furniture designed to remain useful, and worth keeping, for years.
